What I believe to be the program’s future

At first, when introduced to the profile, a principal or other educational leader might say something like, “This doesn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. I know our teachers are frustrated; I know there is a lot of confusion; I know the program is difficult to implement.” However, the profile reveals a realistic set of possibilities as to why the conditions exist. It is one thing to say, “The teachers are frustrated and angry.” It is quite another to say, “The teachers are frustrated and angry quite possibly because the program lacks clarification and the teachers feel they are being evaluated on something they are confused about. In addition, it’s quite possible that they don’t agree with the philosophical underpinnings of the new program.”

Extending the scenario, the principal then might say, “If we want to improve the environmental health of the program, we need to clear up the confusion and allow the teachers an opportunity to discuss the differences between the past and new programs. Perhaps a compromise can be reached. Apparently, monitoring the program, as well intentioned as it was, has sent the wrong message. We need to rethink how we support implementation.”
